Spend an evening with one of the most beloved figures in Palestinian art, and leave with a painting of your own.
Sliman Mansour, born in Birzeit in 1947, has spent more than five decades painting Palestine: its olive groves, its villages, its women in embroidered thobes, and the steadfast rootedness Palestinians call sumud. His 1973 painting Camel of Hardships, which shows an old porter carrying Jerusalem on his back, became an iconic image of Palestinian identity. During the First Intifada, he also began painting with local materials like mud and henna.
What to expect
We’ll start with a short presentation on Mansour’s life and work and look closely at his paintings: the symbols he returns to, his palette and textures, and how he tells stories of land, memory and resistance. Then you’ll get a set of prompts drawn from his themes to use as a starting point for your own piece. No experience needed. The goal is to respond and create, not to copy.
Your host
The evening is led by Gina Al Karablieh, a Palestinian-American artist and storyteller with a background in Art History and Studio Art. Her work brings together art, media and social justice, using creative platforms to tell personal stories and address political, health and social issues. Her photography of Bethlehem, Ramallah and Palestinian villages and landscapes shares Mansour’s love of land and heritage. See more at ginaalkarablieh.com.
